What If Saliva Were Red?

Read Time:1 Minute, 24 Second

Even when following strict infection control guidelines, cross-contamination can occur during routine dental procedures. Whether it’s a visit with the dental hygienist for an exam and ultrasonic scaling, obtaining digital images, or a visit with the dentist and use of a high-speed handpiece, your practice must thoroughly understand proper infection control practices to keep patients and team members safe.

Created by the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP), If Saliva Were Red is a free downloadable video, for members and non-members, that offers a striking visual of how far saliva can travel and how to prevent the spread using appropriate personal protective equipment, plus a combination of barriers, work practices, and engineering controls.

The video highlights:

  • Common dental infection control and safety flaws.
  • The cross-contamination DHCP would see if saliva were red.
  • How controlling contamination by using personal barrier protection, safe work practices, and effective infection control products, reduces the risk of exposure.

Using real dental healthcare personnel (DHCP), we produced this segment without a voice track to focus closely on procedure-specific dental infection control. The result allows the video to function as a premier training tool for classrooms and practices worldwide, regardless of the native language.

OSAP has also created How to Tell the Story: A Facilitator’s Guide. This guide will equip facilitators, educators, consultants, and in-practice instructors with visual cues and talking points from the video, answers to common questions, a checklist of the elements of a comprehensive training program, and a list of resources. It’s the perfect tool for teaching effective infection control!
